The City of Oakland’s Public Art Program is pleased to announce a call to artists for the Central East Oakland Fire Station 18 Public Art Opportunity. Artists working in all media suitable for a permanent, outdoor setting are invited to apply for this opportunity to create artwork in conjunction with the replacement of Oakland Fire Department Station 18, located at the intersection of Bancroft Avenue and 50th Avenue in Central East Oakland. The selected artist(s) will work closely with city staff and the project architects, Shah Kawasaki of Oakland, CA. The station site is at a highly visible intersection, on a busy vehicular thoroughfare, in a mixed—use working class neighborhood. Artwork should enhance the new facility as a community beacon, relate to the mission of the Oakland Fire Department, and reflect the community surroundings. In addition, the building will be constructed to meet the City of Oakland’s Green Building Ordinance and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certification requirements. Budget: $$115,000 Eligibility: Project is open to practicing, professional artists living or working in the Northern California Bay Area region, defined as the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Solano and Sonoma. Artists working in all permanent visual media are welcome to apply. Deadline for submittal of qualifications: January 23, 2008 Applications for the Oakland Fire Station 18 Public Art Project must be submitted online through the CaFÉ™ website (
